Further development of grids

Reliable electricity supply is also based on a good grid infrastructure. Since 2008, Swissgrid has been responsible for the operation and utilization of the high voltage grid in Switzerland. Currently, the grid infrastructure in the northern part of Switzerland is adequate. However, there are problems with grid connections to the production regions in Ticino and Valais. A crucial factor for secure electricity supply in future will be the scheduled implementation of the transmission grid master plan ("Sachplan Übertragungsleitungen" or SÜL) adopted by the Federal Council. This master plan contains various developments and additions for the entire Swiss grid.

In future, improved coordination of the ongoing development of grids and production capacity throughout Europe will be essential. Thanks to the good international interconnection of grids, Switzerland and its neighbours can offer each other mutual assistance in emergency situations (such as major grid interruptions). This is a significant contribution to security of supply. In addition, good grid interconnection is important for the smooth import and export of electricity.
