Axpo AG

Axpo AG is the leading producer of electricity in Switzerland. The electricity is produced using nuclear energy, hydroelectric energy and renewable energy. Together with the grid infrastructure of the participating cantons, CKW and EGL, Axpo AG has the most important transmission and distribution network in Switzerland. In order to manage its power plants optimally, Axpo AG is actively engaged in the trading of electricity on the international markets.

Axpo AG was established in 1914 as a joint venture by nine cantons who together wanted to secure the supply of energy. Axpo AG employs around 1,400 employees.

Hydropower

Axpo AG is the largest producer of hydropower in Switzerland. Axpo AG's hydropower plants are scattered throughout the entire Northeast of Switzerland, from Graubünden to the Hochrhein and Valais.

Nuclear energy

In addition to the river power plants and storage power plants, Axpo AG's power plant fleet also includes nuclear power plants. Axpo AG is the soleoperator of the Beznau nuclear power plant and has significant holdingsin the nuclear power plants at Gösgen and Leibstadt.

New energies

Axpo AG is also betting on new energies. Together with CKW, EGL and Axpo, Axpo AG wants to become the leading producer of electricity from new energysources in Switzerland.The focus is on biomass, small hydropower and geothermal energy. Theseenergy sources are largely weather-independent and can provideimportant base load electricity. Axpo AG  invests in selected companies andprojects, and is also investigating wind power plants in attractiveforeign locations.

Grids

The Grids division is responsible for distributing electricity at differentvoltage levels. Axpo AG operates a 380/220 kV transmission grid fortransporting large volumes of electricity over greater distances and a 110/50 kV distribution grid for cross-regional and a 16 kV grid forregional distribution.

Trading and Marketing

Axpo AG'sTrading and Marketing division is responsible for electricity trading,risk and portfolio management as well as providing services tocustomers in North-Eastern Switzerland via Axpo Vertrieb AG. In orderto ensure that its power plant fleet is operated as economically aspossible and to optimise the security of supply, Axpo AG takes part in whatis known as OTC trading (spot trading, over the counter).

Profit falls significantly– Axpo restructures to improve performance and is planning investments of more than CHF 20 billion to ensure security of supply

Axpo Group profits are down substantially for the 2010/11 financial year (as per 30.9.2011). Operating profit (EBIT) of CHF 139 million and consolidated net profit of CHF 45 million were significantly below the figures for the previous year of CHF 538 million and CHF 409 million respectively.
